Television s Influence On Our Vision On Worldview And...

In modern times, television (T.V.) has become a crucial part of our everyday lives. One relies on T.V. for news, entertainment, and knowledge. Consequently, television impairs our vision on worldview and culture. Television has an impacted influence on our judgement; as a result, it causes us to think that we are knowledgeable about everyone’s ethnic background. In actuality, we are blinded by the portrayal of cultures on television leading to ignorance of cultural history. Ultimately, television promotes negative notions of divergent backgrounds. Everybody Hates Chris embodies this idea by propelling stereotypical views upon the audience, exemplifying the racial differences of minorities versus the majority, and denoting the African-American cultural experience. Stereotypes allow humans to generalize groups of people without taking into account individuality and counterculture. They serve as people’s way of categorizing others based on social norms and expectations. So ciologist Michael Omi aims to reinforce this notion when he asserts, â€Å"Ideas about race, therefore, have become ‘common sense’—a way of comprehending, explaining, and acting in the world.† (627). This understanding, however, can be disrupted once black and white subjects become grey and stereotypes no longer apply. Pros and Cons of Using a Plus-Minus Grading System Essay

Student and Faculty Views of Plus-Minus Grading Systems Working Paper Series—07-11 | December 2007 Jim Morgan (928) 523-7385 James.morgan@nau.edu Gary Tallman Robert Williams All professors at: Northern Arizona University The W. A. This usually takes the form of a plus-minus (+/-) grading system in one version or another. While a variety of reasons have been put forth for the move to +/- grades, a key motivation†¦show more content†¦Note that about one third of the schools continue to use whole-letter only grading systems. Among public schools, 30 of 71 (42.5 percent) use only whole-letter grading. Plus-minus grading systems are clearly the most prevalent type of grading system among this group of schools. To clarify the notation used below, the A+ to C+ system would use the grades A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C , D, F, while an A+ to D- system would use A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, F and so on. The plus or minus typically raises (lowers) the grade by .3 or .33 grade points. As the table indicates, ma ny schools 1 do not allow pluses and minuses across their full range of grades. The grade of A+ creates the possibility of a GPA greater than 4.0 and, probably for this reason; only 9 of the 60 schools with a +/- system include an A+. Four of the 9 schools using the A+ resolve the GPA problem by recording the A+ as a 4.0 when calculating GPAs, so that the A+ becomes just a notation on individual course grades. Schools also differ with respect to the bottom of the +/- range. Most frequently, pluses and minuses are used all the way down through the D-, however, due to issues relating to transfer grades and determining the grade required for satisfying prerequisites, a number of schools terminate the use of pluses and minuses with the D+ (they doShow MoreRelatedSolution Fundamental Corporate Finance122999 Words   |  492 Pagestreasurer’s office and the controller’s office are the two primary organizational groups that report directly to the chief financial officer. The Use Of Modern Plastic Surgery And Cosmetic Surgery

Introduction Throughout the twentieth century, the use of modern plastic surgery has evolved from a procedure used to provide treatment for disfiguring facial of the soldiers during WWI into a slave of modern beauty culture, more commonly known as â€Å"cosmetic surgery† (Gillies H, 1920). Although, the term â€Å"plastic surgery† and â€Å"cosmetic surgery† are used interchangeably, they are intrinsically different. On one hand, cosmetic surgery aims to enhance a patient’s appearance, which can be performed in all areas such as breasts, nose of body shape. Plastic surgery, on the other, aims to reconstruct facial and body defects such as burns, which are critical to their rehabilitation. (American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, 2016). Despite the optimistic view of such invention, some serious criticisms have been raised regarding the side effects of the patients undergoing a cosmetic surgery. Whilst both academics and publics have long debated on this matter, there is st ill a significant lack of literature which emphasizes specifically on young people despite the increasing figure of teenagers undergoing cosmetic surgery. For this reason, my research papers aim to focus specifically on the perspectives of international students’ in the UK on the procedure of cosmetic surgery. The war in its entirety shows us the glory and the power but for each individual who has suffered a physical damage or mental disorder, all the wars of all sorts are just not worthwhile. If the soldiers ever return home, almost all the soldiers come back to their home with a completely different mindset and they all get nightmares about their horrifying memories that they have lived through. We all think of veteran soldiers as having a post-traumatic stress disorder or crippled, physically and mentally, but the story, Stockings, shows us a different type of soldier that does not give in to this powerful effect and lives through the horrible moments with happiness. The main point of this short story is that the war has grave impacts on all the individual soldiers involved in it but the ways to mentally survive through the war exist and they are to have a faith or a superstition to affect a change, have a purpose to outlive the war and go back to the old ways or have a positive mindset towards a happy moment such as love. In any case, Henry Dobbins, portrayed by Tim OBrien, is a strong man of faith and his simple qualities help him through his life as a soldier, majorly affected by a pair of stockings of the love of his life. First of all, scientists proved that post-traumatic stress disorder is an anxiety disorder, caused when a person was in a terrifying event that threatened to cause a grave physical harm. This is just another way of describing a mental environment during a war because a war is always threatening to cause death, hunger and pain. It is helpful, in these situations, to have a strong faith or a superstition that can help the soldiers mind into a more relaxed state. In a group of soldiers, there is always a Christian who has his bible close to him at all times and as an atheist, a person might wonder how a book would save him from all the dangers caused by the war but when a soldier profoundly believes in god, it can have a positive effect on the soldiers mind which helps him perform much better in many aspects. In this story, the narrator states, The pantyhose, he said, had the properties of a good-luck charm.(OBrien, P. 94) Henry Dobbins profoundly believed in his absurd superstition that when he wore his girlfriends stockings, he will be safe from all danger. Obviously, no stockings or pantyhose would ever deflect bullets or save him from a bomb attack but OBrien, through Henry Dobbins, is showing us that a positive state of mind can greatly affect reality. Henry Dobbins was a good man, and a superb soldier, but sophistication was not his strong suit(OBrien, P. 93) was how the narrator described him and this clearly tells us that his simplicity in mind helped him believe in his stockings superstition and it helped his physical being survive through the events with the help of a positive mentality. .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e , .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e .postImageUrl , .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e , .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e:hover , .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e:visited , .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e:active { border:0!important; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e:active , .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ude672a84dcd1501b69463666bba2016e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Around the World in Eighty Days EssaySecondly, an optimistic mind, like Henry Dobbins, always has a dream in front of them that they wholly believe will come true and it gives the optimistic minds their most beneficial state of mind, their lack of stress. Whenever anyone has a purpose in their lives that they must accomplish, they tend to work the hardest amongst people and they have a better chance of accomplishment than a person who just does things for the sake of doing. Bakers, for example, might bake a poor cake if they are working for the sake of earning money but if they had a purpose or a goal in their mind such as serving a perfect food for their dearest lover, th ey will work really hard and it will result as a magnificent cake. Such is the case for soldiers when they have a set of mind to work for an accomplishment and Henry Dobbins purpose to outlive his situation was depicted by the author as this: a place where he might someday take his girlfriend to live.(OBrien, P. 94) Henry Dobbins clearly had a happy vision that he wanted to accomplish, a purpose that drove him to outlive this horrendous moment of his life and survive the Vietnamese war to be embraced back home by his girlfriend. While he tripped a Bouncing Betty(OBrien, P. 94) or got caught in the open during a fierce little firefight,(OBrien, P.94) he was imagining himself back home, giving and receiving love to his girlfriend and this mindset helped him survive through all these problems. Whether it be because of love, due to a dream, or caused by an event, if a soldier, or anyone in any situation, has a mind set for future success, it can have a profound impact upon his current situation and in the case of Henry Dobbins, it will help him, both mentally and physically, survive through the war and come back home to be just like the way it used to be. Lastly, Terry Goodkind has mentioned in his first book, Wizards First Rule that the enemies are the strongest and the hardest to defeat if they wholly believe in what they do. This is true, in every aspect, because if anyone has their mind set to do something with a positive vision, they will attempt to do so with all their might. This was also not too different from Henry Dobbins because he was, as mentioned in the story, like America itself, big and strong, full of good intentions.(OBrien, P. 93) He had a positive influence that kept him away from all the dangers and his mind was deflecting all the bad impacts that wars have on soldiers. This is because warm and good influences, such as love, are affecting the soldiers mind to look at the world in a positive way and do all the things that a soldier can do in a rightful manner. In Henry Dobbins case, this good influence comes from his superstition of the stockings and the author, Tim OBrien didnt put stockings into the story without a reason. Stockings, in this story, symbolize love and home and are clearly a sexual fetish for Dobbins. They are what could be considered the most opposite things from the war but as he wore his girlfriends stockings, They gave access to a spiritual world, where things were soft and intimate.(OBrien, P. 94) The relationship between his girlfriend and himself was indeed what gave him the intimate feelings that werent part of his life as a soldier and it helped his mind settle in a different place while his body was fighting for his mental dream to be accomplished. With the warm and positive thoughts, such as the mindset of Henry Dobbins, all the bad influences around a soldier can be gotten rid of because if you believed in Christ, you will know that all the devils around you cant harm you so if you had a similar positive mindset or any type of faith that ruled over your body, it will help any soldier ignore the situation near him and survive all the rough circumstances. .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c , .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c .postImageUrl , .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c , .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c:hover , .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c:visited , .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c:active { border:0!important; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c:active , .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u13b1a28d441dd792a7d7c1d52280519c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Drama Billy Liar Section One EssayOn the whole, the amazing events where Henry Dobbins got away from danger wasnt because he was big and strong,(OBrien, P. 93) or he physically had a pantyhose of his girlfriend around his neck nor was it because there was a secret magic involved with his precious stockings. The entire story boils down to a simple conclusion, that Henry Dobbins could rid himself of all the bad influences with his none-sophisticated mind and his positive mentality, solely inside his brain. He survived because of his faith in superstition that changed him to become a mentally strong person, he could keep going because he had a purpose, a vision and a dream to accomplish when he was finished with the war and he was able to keep his mindset from becoming insane due to his positive, optimistic mind. It isnt just a theory that a happy and warm mind brings survival and success in even the most dangerous and unlikely situation. If everyone was like Henry Dobbins, there would be no reason for pain and suffering to exist in our world and everyone will have a profound motivation that helps them become a better person, a better soldier or any type of worker. Tim OBrien was able to state all these motivational impacts upon the readers in a mere page and he was telling all of us to think more happily, have a great goal to accomplish and work hard for it just like Henry Dobbins.
